Lesson

What I feel like should have been going over more is the topic of reasoning and evidence. I feel like this is one of the most important part in everyone’s paper nowadays which is how to present your points to the audience and how to present it in a way that makes them understand you. I feel like a lot of my papers have problems providing the points I need and if I had more information on how to use it I believe my papers will indeed be stronger. This goes well with the type of language you use in your paper. I learned a lot about persuasive papers and how they take out any detail that makes your paper weak in any way. Therefore you only use evidence that support your topic in order to get the outcome of the audience that you want. I feel like this topic is a very important part and each student should understand the uses of it.

What I Liked about the Class

I like this class because there were many interesting topics I had to read in order to do my homework. I feel like there were a lot of things I learned from these topics giving me a stronger understanding of word uses and how we can utilize it in real life. I like how the class is presented in which everyone do their daily blogs and also comments on other people’s blogs. I feel like it fits the students nowadays because technology is definitely a big part in our life not. It’s similar to facebook and twitter, which people use almost daily. It wasn’t hard to access this page at least 4-5 times a day and was definitely easy to work with. The only problem with this class was it was a bit hard to catch on to everything in the beginning. I feel like if we met with the teacher one time going over the instructions it would definitely be easier. Other than that the work was fairly straightforward and many topics were interesting to read.

Class Lessons

This class have introduced me to many topics that I haven’t took notice before. I learned how to interact with groups and point out the different roles each member plays. In order to have a strong group each member has to play their roles in order to have a successful outcome. I learned about the many uses of language and how to engage with others to make a certain view or perspective stronger on your side. This helped me with my speeches and papers because it showed me what I was missing in some of my papers for my other class to make it stronger. I noticed there were many main ideas or points I could add to my paper and speeches to reach out to audiences in a stronger view. Furthermore I learned the different types of reasoning and evidence and how to utilize it to make the audience feel a certain way. Last I would like to talk about the different arguments people use and how people use it to express their point of view. Overall I learned a lot from this class, which I can use now for my future classes.

Prediction

They were useful because they explained multiple ways of how to define a prediction. In mission critical was very useful because they provided more about what can be proven with facts leading to a stronger prediction. The website provided a lot of questions and as more facts were recorded into the answer the higher the prediction was coming true. In casual argument most of it was based on what could have happened more assumption to make a stand. There are many sides to the reason why things happen and they just provided many ways in why it could happen. There are not many facts more like something that people observe in one point of view. Not much hard facts and everything is based on a judgment. Therefore I believe mission critical was most useful because it provided hard facts in the argument.

Perception

When I was in high school there were many times when I had misleading perception of people in my school. I’m not necessarily judging but their attitude towards me when they approach me. I remember I thought one of my classmates didn’t like me because he always gave me a stare that just didn’t look pleasant. He was always mad in class, always putting a grudge on his face. Therefore I believed he just hated everyone and must be having bad days everyday. I really thought he was that kind of person and whenever we had group projects I would try to not be in the same group because he didn’t look social either. My friends actually knew him so it gave me a chance to see what’s his problem and turned out he had horrible vision and just wasn’t a morning person. I was surprised because he was a friendly person and very humorous apparently. After that I never assumed anything until I actually knew more about the person. I feel like observations don’t always give you the exact prediction but more of a thought of what might be true.

Virgo

My horoscope is a Virgo and this is what it shows for the day “Someone who is going through some demanding work issues needs your compassion today.” I actually check my horoscope whenever I stream the web just because it gives me an idea on how my day can turn out. They aren’t always true but most of the time it’s like right on point. Either the day eventually turns out like they predicted or its already what they predicted. I feel like science strengthens people’s predictions. They provide a good amount of facts leading to a logical prediction. I feel like observing a person for a while we can also make predictions of others and sometimes be on point too. Science shows that many of our actions define who we are and if we do things constantly scientists can figure out our personality and who we are as a person. Therefore I do believe in these daily horoscopes just because everyday you don’t know what are going to come up and this daily horoscope gives me an idea of what might come.

News Bias

I would like to talk about the point about bias in the news. I definitely notice the bias in the news today and I feel like they hide things from their viewers. This is their strategy in manipulating the viewers and making them believe in something that they want them to hear. I feel like the government definitely censors some of the things they show in the news so it won’t show a bad side to what the government does. Especially thing they want to hide from the audience so it doesn’t cause any violence toward them. That’s why I feel like I shouldn’t believe in everything they show in the news because I know there is always another story to things. I usually analyze the news much more the get a better understanding of what happened. That way I know I'm not agreeing to something when only knowing one part of the story. The Internet definitely exposes this bias from the news letting the audience know what is actually happening inn the world. I take the Internet really serious because there is so much networking online; it keeps us notified of what’s really happening. What I see on TV could have some fallacy that I wouldn’t understand until it is fully proven to me. Therefore I believe news is bias, and every one should not put their full belief into it until all research is done.

Internet Plagiarism

Sadler explains how Internet plagiarism is wrong because there are many wrongs in doing so. She talks about how plagiarism can affect the people in school such as professors and the fellow classmates in ones class. Plagiarism affects the students by not doing equal amounts of work as others in the class. Mostly plagiarism is seen as unfair to students and professors. Plagiarism abuses the rule of academic honesty, which gives other students the reason to do the same. Hunt explains how many students do this to follow the rules of every teacher. Students have many different teachers, which is not surprisingly teaching their own way. Internet plagiarism is used to satisfy these teachers. Overall most students use plagiarism just to keep up their grade and that’s what most students aim for therefore its ok to cut some corners some times. Overall they do enough research just to get the grade they deserve. I believe Sadler had a much stronger argument because she provides much more reasons and the fairness of not plagiarizing. Some students do try much harder than the ones who plagiarize and are unfair to some students. I believe plagiarism is not a bad thing if you know how to use it. As long as you are able to understand the text there should be no reason why you cant use it.

Media Experience

Media experiences affect me on my worldviews and what I value today. What I see in the media is where I usually make my decisions or they affect my every decision. The more media I am exposed to the more it shows up on my head. There are many media messages Imp surrounded by therefore I usually analyze them by searching them online and reading about the purpose of the message. I feel like every message the media sends has a reason behind it and before I agree with it I definitely have to do my research before I can refer it to other people. The Internet is where most people get their mass media and I feel like it definitely affects all our decisions. The social networking among the people who surf the web shows everyone’s point of views making it easier for everyone to connect easily. The more people start to connect the greater the chance people are going through changes of what they value and what they perceive the world as.

Advertisements

I was most interested in talking about how people advertise today. I feel like advertising is a very strong way in attracting consumer. Ads are not an easy thing to do either; it has to be smart and clever to make a consumer buy their product. I feel like the strongest way in attracting a consumer is definitely from the connection they make with the consumer. If there is no connection from the media and the consumer, there will be no reason for them to buy their product. The media also has to keep up to date in to what is “in” and what is “out” that way there on the same page as the consumers. Advertisers are selling their stuff so they should give there “all out” at all times or the consumer wont by. Like in our Boss text, the consumers are the judges and the producers have to sell themselves to consumers in order to benefit. Another way is definitely through what we see on TV, if we saw a product that a celebrity is using, consumers are definitely attracted to. I feel like advertising is a hard thing to do and takes a lot of thought to attract the consumer.

Ways of Advertisments

Wootan insists that advertisements regulate on their advertisement because their target is a mainly child. She believes that these advertisements should involve more nutritious food therefore children are attracted to it and start eating healthy. She show statistics of advertising fast foods to the children and ever since she believes a certain percent of these kids get a little overweight as years pass by. Her strategy is to prevent obesity and she believes regulating the advertisements can help children in becoming obese in a later age. Liodice believes that we all have freedom of speech therefore we can express what they want. He believes there shouldn’t be a limit to what people advertise because they wont is able to show what they are fully capable of. I believe Wootan makes the stronger argument because it does target everyone and its not always a message everyone understands. People get manipulated in ads and I think if there was more regulation it would prevent any health matters to consumers. She provided with the example of obesity and which I believe is a huge problem today in the US so I would have to agree with Wootan.

Marketing Strategies

There are definitely many strategies in marketing people use today. Most are effective which attracts their consumers in buying their products. On marketing strategy that I have encountered recently is online for tickets for sport games. Since basketball season and baseball season just started tickets are very cheap online. The ads online attract me to buy them because most people just want to save. I felt like this was a good technique because I notice people only like to buy stuff when they see discounts, no matter how much they get deducted off but either way they save in the end. Consumers today definitely compare products everyday because the resources are easy to get. For example I love researching a product online before I buy it, then I would like to ask my friends. This strategy is a critique strategy because they have the product themselves and they give me reviews on it and if not I will check the consumer reviews online. This is one of the most effective ways in selling a product when they let the people review on their product.

Discussion 3

I would like to share my thoughts about evidence and how it plays a strong part in our everyday life. I feel like without evidence nothing can ever be proven or there will be no meaning to it. People make decisions everyday without evidence and I believe that is wrong because people make the wrong choices in the end. Evidence should also be analyzed all the time in order to make good choices. There are much different evidence used and each one has its own special function. Using the right evidence is important when persuading a crowd because of the facts included in the evidence. Such as who said it, the reference is important because if the person has experience in that field for a long time it might persuade a person to believe you. Therefore evidence is important in deciding what is true and what is false.

Discussion 2

Condon does not believe in the existence of UFO or any other living creatures, which is not identified at this moment of time. He feels like any study made on this topic is just to get people or the public worried or anxious to know what else is out there. Hyena believes that there are definitely more living thing outside the world. Believes further scientific research should be done to make sure their predictions are right. He believes more data and analyzations should be processed to show a stronger point in why he believes it is real. Paynter is a realist so he doesn't believe it unless there is hard evidence on it. He doesn't agree or disagree but with the right proofs he will make a decision to believe it or not. I agree with painter the most because I believe everything needs hard evidence to prove something. Without the right evidence there is no reason to believe it because in my mind it doesn't exist. Therefore Paynter definitely has a stronger argument by seeing it and have hard evidence.

Knowledge vs Wisdom

The way I look at wisdom and knowledge is wisdom is more of the what we get through experiencing something. Knowledge is more of what we get by learning something through a text or simply being taught by someone else. I feel like in college we get both sides of this because college is very open as in you get to make yuour own choices. There are many activites in college and many different things you can be a part of. things such as being in a fraternity helps you get more wisdom in the process. When you get this wisodm you will be able to apply it later in life. You get knowledge in class when you are learning from a teacher. We all go to class everyday and learn things we don' always have interest in but in the end we get a new kind of knowledge into our brains. Therefore I feel like we get both knowledge and wisdom in college because there are many things we learn and many activities we become a part of.

Language

In this weeks lesson I would like to talk about the certain language we use in our everyday life. There are many different types and each has a certain function to it. Informative language is phrases that are said which can be either true or false. Directive is also used often because it a phrase that is directly towards someone which causes an influence. I use this a lot because I talk to my friends that way especially when we call each other out to hangout. One of the strongest deliverance to your language would be the expressive language, which requires you to express yourself. This delivers more of an impact towards the listener because you’re expressing yourself to them. I felt like expressive and emotive is a bit similar because they both show emotion. If we all learn how to utilize these different types of languages we will be able to reach out to many different people. Our communication will be stronger because we know when to use it.

Rhetoric Devices

If you know me very well I can be a very sarcastic person. I don’t use it in a mean or offensive way but more of a way for humor. I can say I use it a lot in conversations with friends or even paper I write. The sarcasm just shows a deeper understanding to the topic and in the end we all just laugh at it because we think of the most ridiculous way to make each other understand what were talking about. I probably used it in my speech in the past week because I didn’t know how to demonstrate my topic so I kind of acted out a scene from a movie. Which turned out to be a great tool and the audience was definitely on the same track as me. Another rhetoric tool I use is a hyperbole. This I use almost everyday such as phrases like the “ the weather is hot as hell”, we all know it can’t get that hot. But I say it to show how hot it is and people understand that I'm burning in the sun and its time for a quick stop at the beach. Therefore I use many rhetorical devices in my everyday life just to express myself to others in a stronger way.

A True Critical Thinker

Sally ride definitely show all the qualities of a critical thinker. As she goes on talking about how she is a good problem solver. Which means she has a strong point of analyzing a problem and providing a solution to this problem. She also has skills in research because it made her goals come true. She kept focus on the goals she wanted to achieve and never lost focus. With her good communication and people skill she was able to learn more and more about her future career and how to utilize these skills. In the end she gained these skills by communicating with others and doing some of her own research on the side. She is definitely a strong role model for other people because she literally took what she believed in and made it happen. She analyzed, communicated with others, and researched in order to accomplish her goals.

Sampling

In this weeks lesson I was most interested in the many different sampling people take when trying to collect data for a certain claim. We take samples in our everyday life, the question is how accurate is it and if its bias towards other people. Some examples would be like people who prefer which type of Phone Company to use. The surveys could be taken from a group of people using that company already. Which gives the data some bias because it’s not completely fair to say which company better. That is why they developed random sampling so everyone has the equal chance of being a part of the particular sample. Therefore there will be no bias in the data because it is all random. If the sample was to be a random sampling the generalization made will be more accurate. The main goal of sampling is the population and the variation in the data.

The Five Proofs

After reading the five proofs I would have to agree with Aquinas because he provides many facts into his claim. On the other hand I disagree with how Dawkins believe evolution and belief in god is incompatible because his reasons are not strong enough. He has no proof in how everything was created. Honestly if it was based on natural selection there is always the question of how everything started. There had to be a creator to everything, with the reasons Dawkins provide I don’t believe it is strong enough to say there us no god. If Aquinas was still alive he will definitely disagree with what Dawkins is saying. I feel like he will explain more about the design of that god has come up with because I feel like Dawkins don’t understand about the design of the world. I feel like everything in the world happens for a reason, could be a certain balance. Natural disasters and miracles happen for a reason, we will never have a strong enough argument to support it. But I believe that will be something Aquinas will explain more about if he was alive.

Future Career

There have been many changes and shifts in my life, which made who I am today. Experiences I have went through has altered what I believe are my strengths and what used to be my strengths. Growing up I was open to many things such as being a cop, doctor, and even an artist. I wanted to be a cop because I loved having obstacles and catching the bad guys when I was little. A doctor because of the people that left my life I always liked taking care of people in return. I even wanted to be an artist because I loved drawing, took many drawing classes, but soon all these skills and interest began to fade. I feel like anyone can be whom he or she wanted as long as they put their heart into it. All these shifts left me to become and engineer because I love working with people, putting creative ideas into my work, and just creating something that everyone can benefit from. I began to identify all these strengths by noticing the person I am and how people see me. All these are reasons, which led me to this career because I felt like I always put m heart into projects, and I'm good at it. I developed a strong connection with people and some even say I would make a good engineer one day. People around me definitely gave me more motivation into what I was doing because someone else agrees with my point of view.

Teamwork!

In this week of discussion I felt like group production was what got me most interested. In order to have a successful group everyone has their own role and the amount they contribute to the group. If one person was to not act upon their role the whole group will not reach their goal. Like this week I got to meet up with the group for the first time, we basically made decisions by the group’s choice that way no one is left out. The more perspective we have on a topic it will always make our arguments stronger. With new ideas and points of views to choose from, it makes it easier for the group to achieve their goals. I feel like reading the chapter about how to assign jobs to each person definitely helped make our group production a lot better. I also though leadership roles also play a big role because without the right leader there is no coordination and it will be harder to understand what is the point that they are reaching. For this group production is very important and the way your project comes out depends on how every body contributes not just one person.

Dr. Novello

Dr. Novello was born with a mindset that she wasn't going to let anyone stop her from doing anything. She was dedicated and always strived to do her best at anything she puts her mind and heart into. Ever since she was a little girl, she knew she had a disadvantage due to her poor health and living situations. However, she used that as a motivation to push her to achieve bigger and better things in life. Her main focus was to identify and reduce the increasing rates of AIDS, violence, alcohol, and tobacco. To do this, she went out to the public to speak her mind out. She was never quiet; she was known to have a big voice. She sets her mind to educate the public about smoking among children and teens; she goes to schools and work with educational boards. She took notice in Camel cigarette ads and taught that to the kids. Because she has a background with working with UNICEF and health institutes, most of the things she says would be considered concrete and honest.

Inductive Arguement

I am a person that is always looking for places to eat is often introduced to many new places to eat. There is this sushi place, Sushi Infinity, I‘ve been waiting to try for couple of months because I’ve been seeing many ads for this restaurant with a low price. It was about 2 weeks ago when I decided to ask my friend which is also a food critic to go eat there with me. When I told her she wasn’t too amazed because she had it before and actually introduced me to another place, Old Town Sushi that had way cheaper prices with the same or maybe even better quality of food. She basically persuaded me because she explained the quality of their raw meat, she definitely knows her food. Once I heard it wasn’t as fresh as the other place I quickly changed my mind. With good facts she persuaded me to eat at another restaurant and I believe that is what helps make your argument strong.

Developing a Strong Conclusion

In order to make a conclusion stronger there is many times when you have to decide what are the quantity and the quality of the statement. A good way is rewriting statements into standard form making it less broad and easier to understand for readers. In quantity it is categorized as universal or particular. This means, if the topic your talking about has to do with a whole population or a specific sample your taking out. This will give the reader a better understanding because you’re more specific on the topic. For example, you can talk about cats in an essay. If you single out tigers from cats it will let the leader know your just talking about tigers rather than all cats. The other category is quality, which is a positive or negative. Identifying the quality lets the reader know the point your trying to put out. The quality is where you establish your points with words such as no. Therefore identifying these categories gives the reader a better understanding of your arguments because it provides key words.

"Perspectives of the Death Penalty"

I believe what Sister Helen Perjean has a good reasoning and how we should forgive ones who sin. She puts out how we should not hate for hate and evil for evil therefore we should not murder for murder. This phrase supports the reason why death penalty should be banned. The law should not have the power to decide who can live or not. I think it’s a good enough punishment for life in prison, what makes us different from the murderer when were basically doing the same thing. In the reading they believe crime would decrease due to death penalty but I believe there will always be crime. For Christians they might believe in the death penalty, but religion cant always be used because there are no facts behind it. Therefore religion is not moral because no facts prove what is right and wrong. I stand strong with banning the death penalty because it doesn't make us any better than the ones we decide to kill.

"Silver Blaze"

1) Sherlock Holmes believed that many people are not able to put aside what is truth and theory. People often hear theories and opinions in their everyday life and some accept these theories and some actually look into finding the truth. If people were to always keep all the opinions of others soon they will be left with nothing. There is no proof of what they say until you search for the truth. People eventually get all their facts from people instead of something that they can support themselves. For this Sherlock Holmes believe if there are facts to a problem, you will soon find the truth if you look hard enough.

I actually have experienced this with some of my friends. Most which watches a lot of television and believes almost every single thing coming from the news. When you hear of news reporters they completely think the information they give them is completely the truth. What they didn't know is that there is a lot of things they hide behind those cameras. Things they have to censor in order to protect the government. I showed him many newspapers and research on videos showed him all the cover-ups, providing him with facts that we shouldn't always trust the media because there are a lot of lies behind it. People won’t believe you or let go of their answers until they see it themselves. Therefore people need to do more research and not always believe in what they hear from others.

Discussion 3

I believe the most important part of group work would probably be group roles. These roles involve the, Information seeker, Information giver Initiator, Elaborator, and Administrator, each has a specific role in the group. this is the best way to divide work between each group member that way the work is evenly contributed. since each person is assigned to a role they are more focused on their own goals so facts will be more in depth. work is easier when each person is given a goal so when they present to each other the information is fully detailed giving more options to the table to choose from. when ideas are presented thats when they start working as a group, choosing the topics everyone is interested in and forming a well organized presentation. this process help groups communicate because each person has to present their own task to the group. I feel like this way of group working is most effective because everyone is able to contribute to fulfill the goals of the group.

Discussion 2

A time that I was about to lose my friend through a decision that I stand strong for was I was against smoking and drinking. I felt like smoking and drinking has so much side affects that can harm someone in the future. In high school smoking and drinking would actually be an act of coolness. Not sure why but I always stood against my beliefs until my friend broke up in his first relationship. There wasn't much ha time that I was about to lose my friend through a decision that I stand strong for was I was against smoking and drinking. I felt like smoking and drinking has so much side affects that can harm someone in the future. In high school smoking and drinking would actually be an act of coolness. Not sure why but I always stood against my beliefs until my friend broke up in his first relationship. There wasn't much he could do to take away the pain mainly tried drinking for the first time and eventually smoking. The more he did it more he changed in his personality such as his attitude towards others and the fact he didn't care no more. I stood my ground and explained how he changed after he was influenced at least 4-5 times a week. I was almost on the edge of our relationship until I felt like the only way was to step away and let him learn himself. I wanted to understand how the people around him cared about him so much that if he loses us in the end he would be alone. When he began realizing what he had before he tried to quit and going back to his old ways. Today he still recovering slowly not as influenced as before which is a lot better. Critical thinking helped me evolve into standing strong to what I believe and think of ways we can take a problem and help solve it in a kindly manner. Standing strong for what I believe helped change my friend and might have saved a life.

Discussion 1

President Barack Obama seems to be leaning toward the direction of equal rights for same sex marriages therefore his stance is consistent. I feel like marriage should not be judged as long as the family is stable any one should have the rights to get married. President Obama was only against same sex marriage because it was against his religion but as he became president he understood how homosexuals should not be treated differently than others. Just because he is against gay marriage due to the federal law it doesn't mean he cant support them on the personal level. Obama tries his best to support same-sex couples by giving them the rights they deserve because everyone is the same no matter what sexual orientation they represent.

President Obama would definitely respond to Nava and Dawidoff’s argument by agreeing with them because he supports the idea that sam-sex couples shouldn't stop others from gaining their rights. Therefore I believe president Obama will take their sides.

Introductory Post

Hi Everyone,

Im currently a junior and majoring in Industrial Technology. I have good experience in communication skills because my work requires it. I'm friendly and always open to meeting new people. I love to travel a lot and just learn about other cultures because its interesting learning how different people live their life. I also enjoy food, on my free time I can say I hunt for new places to eat with friends. I'm very active so pretty much open to any sports but prefer basketball the most. I don't really follow much sports anymore just because I've been really busy with school and work. I listen to many types of music such as jazz, hip-hop, and rock. I'm originally from San Francisco so I go back every other week or just when I have time off work. Something I've been wanting to do is probably start snowboarding. Its been a hobby I want to get better at so lets hope I can make it happen this year!
This is just a little bit of info about me, hope I can get to know all you guys better!
